Hi! My name is Dorie Barnett. I teach third grade at St. John Paul II Catholic School. I have been teaching at St. John Paul’s for 24 years. I earned my teaching degree in 1989 from Indiana University Southeast. In 2001, I earned my Master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.

I have a very supportive family that I would like to tell you about. My husband, Butch, works as a supervisor for a printing company in Louisville. My son, Jacob, graduated from Indiana University Southeast with a business degree. He recently began a job in his field and is working on his master’s degree while studying to take the CPA exam in the near future. My daughter, Brooke, is a junior at Indiana University Southeast. She is going to be an elementary school teacher. She also plays on the softball team at IUS. My youngest daughter, Alexis, just graduated from high school and has already begun taking college classes. She also works at Pet Smart. She takes care of the different animals there and really loves her job! I am very fortunate that my kids were able to attend our wonderful school when they were younger. It is the best school around, and I loved bringing them to work with me every day!

I have a very firm philosophy about being an educator. I believe that education is based upon the nurturing of children to help them grow and develop to make successful contributions to society. Each child is precious and unique in his/her own individual needs and abilities. The relationship between parents, teachers, and students should be to strive for a common goal for each child- a program that best enables each individual student to grow and learn. The third grade curriculum is based on teaching the Indiana Academic Standards. This helps ensure that the students are taught the skills and concepts that align with the ISTEP+ tests and IRead-3 given in the spring of third grade.  St. John Paul II Catholic School’s third grade students have all passed the IRead-3 all four years that the test has been given. Effective classroom management techniques are essential in maintaining the highest level of learning. The rules and consequences in my classroom are set in a way that is conducive to the learning environment. A reward system is also in place to help reinforce positive behavior. I strive to be positive and instill a feeling of self-worth and high self-esteem in my students. I have enjoyed many happy years at St. John Paul II Catholic School. It is very rewarding to be able to teach children in an environment that is centered on God and his teachings. I feel very fortunate to work in an atmosphere that is so family-oriented and I am very thankful that I get to come to work at St. John Paul II Catholic School each and every day!
